Dr. Oguzhan Murat
Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering
Principal Investigator (PI)
Ph.D. University of Oxford
M.Sc. University of Manchester
B.Sc. Nigde University
Dr. Murat earned his B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from Nigde University in 2014. In 2016, he was awarded a graduate scholarship by the Ministry of National Education, Republic of Türkiye, to pursue an M.Sc. in Thermal Power and Fluid Engineering at the University of Manchester, where he graduated with Distinction (the highest postgraduate degree in the UK) and received the Best Dissertation Award for his thesis entitled "Large Eddy Simulation of Flow Through In-Line Heat Exchanger Tube Bundles".

After his masters, he joined the Oxford Thermofluids Institute at University of Oxford as a D.Phil. (Ph.D.) student in Engineering Science (Aerospace Engineering concentration), focusing on the flexible operation of power generation turbines. During his Ph.D., he designed, developed, and commissioned a novel experimental facility to investigate mixed type of flows inside power generation turbine casing cavities. He also performed and validated scale-resolving simulations (Large Eddy Simulations) to improve the accuracy of Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) based turbulence models. Additionally, he studied the influence of turbomachinery casing roughness on heat transfer and aerodynamics using LES. His D.Phil. project was supported by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI), Japan.

In 2022, he joined the von Karman Institute for Fluid Dynamics (VKI) as a postdoctoral fellow and project manager. His work, funded by Safran Aircraft Engines, involved commissioning an experimental wind tunnel facility to investigate performance enhancement in low-pressure turbines for aircraft engines. He implemented various experimental aerodynamic measurement techniques, including hot-wire anemometry, pitot tubes, kiel probes, and multi-hole probes.

In 2023, he was appointed as an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the Faculty of Aeronautics and Astronautics of Ankara Yildirim Beyazit University. He also holds a position as visiting research fellow at the Oxford Thermofluids Institute.

Dr. Murat's research interests lie in experimental and numerical thermofluids-related research, spanning both fundamental areas such as Reynolds stress and turbulent heat flux modeling, and highly applied research, including flexible power generation systems, novel turbine end-wall geometries, and active flow control systems for aircraft.
